PhD Degree for Lynette Oost

Lynette Oost successfully defended her thesis entitled ‘Magnesium at the Heart of Insulin Signaling in Diabetes Mellitus’.

Outline of this thesis
A low serum magnesium level (hypomagnesemia) is often seen in people with diabetes mellitus. In type 2 diabetes, there appears to be a bidirectional relationship between hypomagnesemia and the presence of diabetes mellitus: low magnesium levels increase the risk of developing type 2 diabetes (and perhaps its complications) and type 2 diabetes tends to cause a low magnesium level. The overarching aim of the studies described in this thesis was to identify the molecular causes of hypomagnesemia in diabetes mellitus and to determine its potential health consequences.
